I know you’re probably thinking about DW from the children’s show Arthur, and if you’re not… well I certainly am. My name is Damiera Wilson, but I call myself DW because it reminds me of being a child, watching my favorite childhood show Arthur, and living care-free.
I’ve been thinking about writing a blog for a long time, but I wasn’t sure if I would ever follow through. Sometimes I have so much to say, but I wonder if anyone will listen. Other times, I don’t know what exactly to say and so I don’t say anything. I grew up in a space where anything I ever had to say just didn’t seem important to anyone, and if it was I just couldn’t tell. Either way, I’m opening myself up to those outside of my circle and whoever finds me interesting enough to read this…well read at your own risk!
I’m from the Garden State (love-hate relationship), but most of the time I wish to be Anywhere but Here. That’s also the title of a 1999 film starring Natalie Portman – check it out! I’m 27, and I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Rider University, as well as a Master’s in Legal Studies from Arizona State University. I like school, and I think education is important. School isn’t for everyone, but it was for me. I would stay in school my whole life if I could.
Let’s get something out of the way…I’m really short and it’s the one thing everyone always talks about so I just thought I’d mention it first (wink, wink). At least my short height makes me pretty adorable, if I do say so myself!
On a serious note – I’ve learned to build my own community by being my own supporter, best friend, nosy family member and annoying neighbor. We all have someone like that in our lives who impact us in different ways, and they become our community. I work hard to encourage and uplift myself just like a supporter or best friend would. I constantly remind myself to check-in on my life and to never give up just like that nosy family member would. I even drive myself crazy and force myself to step outside my bubble just like that annoying neighbor.
My reason for writing a blog is because it helps to know that someone else just might understand you – they might “get” you. I’ll be writing about my experiences and what is relevant to me, and the categories range from lifestyle to education and career. I even give advice! This is a safe space to unload my thoughts, feelings, experiences and help others do the same. If you ever need to unload or talk, please do not hesitate to reach out. I am always open to new perspectives.
Read, learn, and enjoy. You might not find what you expected, but hopefully you’ll gain some knowledge you didn’t know you needed.
